Pat Cummins, the star Australian fast bowler, is set to lead Sunrisers Hyderabad in the upcoming 2024 IPL season. The 30-year-old replaces Aiden Markram as captain as the franchise aims for a fresh start following a disappointing last-place finish in the previous season.
Cummins emerged as the top choice for captaincy after being acquired for a substantial INR 20.50 Cr in the auction. Daniel Vettori, the new head coach of SRH, who collaborates with Cummins in the Australian national set-up, selected former national teammate James Franklin as part of the coaching staff, filling the void left by Dale Steyn.
This marks Cummins’ first stint as captain in the IPL, having previously played for Kolkata Knight Riders. Despite not achieving significant success with the ball, Cummins made history with the fastest 14-ball fifty in IPL.
He became the first player to secure a bid over INR 20 Cr before SRH signed him, breaking the record bid with Mitchell Starc’s INR 24.75 Cr acquisition by KKR.
The decision to appoint Cummins as captain comes after SRH’s lackluster 2023 campaign, despite Markram’s success leading the sister franchise Sunrisers Eastern Cape to consecutive titles in SA20.
