England and West Indies face off in the first of three ODIs on December 3rd, in Antigua’s beautiful Sir Vivian Richards Stadium.
England are desperate to bounce back. After a disappointing World Cup, they’re hungry for a win to give their fans something to cheer about. Jos Buttler remains captain, even after his struggles in the World Cup. But with Moeen Ali, Adil Rashid, Dawid Malan, and Chris Woakes missing this series, England’s experience is thin. Jonny Bairstow, Joe Root, and Mark Wood are also taking a break, and Ben Stokes’ injury further disrupts their plans.
West Indies have a new look too. Shai Hope leads, and young guns Sherfane Rutherford and Matthew Forde are getting their first ODI taste. Jason Holder and Nicholas Pooran are missing, choosing the shorter format instead. Kjorn Ottley rejoins the ODI squad. A shock announcement has shaken the West Indies camp. Shane Dowrich, who was surprisingly brought back into the ODI squad, has unexpectedly chosen to retire from international cricket with immediate effect.
This series is a chance for both teams to write a new story. West Indies missed the World Cup for the first time ever, and Shai Hope wants a fresh start. England needs to rediscover their confidence and prove they’re still a force to be reckoned with. Though West Indies and England last played each other in an ODI at the 2019 World Cup, since then this is their first meet in One Day International.
